SKN | IBM Opens Beta Swift Ledger Link for 24/7 Tokenized Deposits

Key Points:
  • IBM has added beta connectivity to Swift’s blockchain-based ledger, allowing banks to instruct tokenized deposit transfers through existing ISO 20022 payment messages.
  • The integration is designed to let financial institutions use established payment and compliance workflows rather than creating separate blockchain-specific processes.
  • IBM also introduced a beta on-premises deployment option for Digital Asset Haven, allowing regulated institutions to operate digital-asset infrastructure and key management within their own data centers.

IBM is expanding its digital-asset infrastructure for financial institutions with new connectivity to Swift’s blockchain-based ledger, giving banks a way to instruct tokenized deposit transfers through familiar financial messaging standards.

The integration was announced Thursday as part of an expansion of IBM’s Digital Asset Haven platform, which is designed for banks and other regulated institutions to manage and secure digital assets.

IBM said financial institutions participating in Swift’s program have already tested tokenized deposits on the ledger using the platform.

IBM Connects Tokenized Deposits to ISO 20022

The beta integration adds a messaging adapter that allows institutions to instruct tokenized deposit transactions using ISO 20022, the global standard used for financial messaging.

The approach allows banks to continue using existing payment formats and compliance processes rather than building separate workflows specifically for blockchain-based transactions.

That interoperability is important as financial institutions increasingly experiment with tokenized deposits and other digital representations of traditional financial assets. Instead of requiring banks to completely replace existing payment infrastructure, the IBM-Swift integration is designed to connect tokenized transactions with established banking processes.

IBM General Manager of IBM Z and LinuxONE Tom McPherson said financial services are entering an environment in which tokenized and traditional assets will need to move alongside one another.

Swift Builds Blockchain Settlement Infrastructure

Swift has been developing its blockchain-based ledger with more than 40 financial institutions as it explores infrastructure for round-the-clock transaction settlement.

The global financial messaging cooperative launched the ledger’s initial pilot in July with 17 banks, including HSBC, Citi, BNP Paribas, UBS and Standard Chartered.

The project is focused on enabling financial institutions to use blockchain infrastructure while maintaining the operational standards and institutional relationships associated with the existing financial system.

In August, HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first live cross-border transaction on the ledger, providing an early demonstration of the infrastructure beyond testing environments.

IBM’s beta connectivity now extends Digital Asset Haven into that developing Swift ecosystem.

Banks Can Keep Digital-Asset Infrastructure On-Premises

IBM is also introducing a beta option for financial institutions that want to operate Digital Asset Haven within their own data centers.

The on-premises version runs on IBM Z and LinuxONE infrastructure without relying on public cloud services. Banks and other regulated institutions can therefore retain digital-asset operations and key management within their existing data-center environments.

For institutions with strict requirements around control of infrastructure and digital-asset keys, the deployment model provides an alternative to relying entirely on externally hosted environments.

The offering also keeps digital-asset management within infrastructure that financial institutions may already use for critical workloads.

Tokenized Deposits Move Toward Existing Banking Workflows

Tokenized deposits are increasingly being explored as a way for banks to represent commercial-bank money in digital form while connecting it to blockchain-based settlement infrastructure.

IBM’s approach focuses on the operational bridge between those emerging assets and existing banking systems. By supporting ISO 20022 instructions, the platform allows institutions to interact with tokenized deposits using a messaging framework already familiar across the financial sector.

The Swift ledger provides the blockchain-based infrastructure, while Digital Asset Haven supplies the connectivity and digital-asset management layer.

That combination could allow banks to experiment with tokenized deposits without requiring an entirely separate set of payment and compliance processes.

Outlook

IBM’s integration with Swift’s blockchain ledger represents another step toward connecting tokenized financial assets with established banking infrastructure. The beta deployment will give participating institutions a way to test tokenized deposit transfers through ISO 20022 while maintaining existing operational and compliance workflows.

The addition of an on-premises deployment option also places greater emphasis on institutional control over digital assets and cryptographic keys. As banks continue testing tokenized deposits and blockchain-based settlement, interoperability with existing payment infrastructure and the ability to meet institutional security requirements will remain central to broader adoption.
