SKN | Kraken Expands Tokenized Stock Offering as xStocks Move Toward Global Equity Markets

Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, is expanding its xStocks initiative beyond U.S. equities through a partnership with global fintech provider GTN. The move represents another step in the rapidly developing tokenization sector, where traditional financial assets are increasingly being represented on blockchain networks.

The expansion comes as financial institutions explore blockchain-based infrastructure to improve access, settlement efficiency, and global distribution of traditional assets. For sophisticated crypto investors, Kraken’s strategy highlights the growing convergence between digital asset markets and traditional equity markets while emphasizing the importance of regulatory compliance across jurisdictions.

xStocks Expands Beyond U.S. Equities Into Global Markets

Kraken’s xStocks currently provide blockchain-based representations of U.S. equities, with each token backed on a one-to-one basis by a corresponding company share held through regulated custody arrangements. Through its partnership with GTN, Payward plans to expand the product offering to include equities from international markets.

The initial expansion will focus on Hong Kong-listed equities, followed by potential access to U.K., European, and South Korean stocks, subject to regulatory approval in each jurisdiction. The initiative could eventually extend tokenization beyond equities into additional asset classes.

This development reflects increasing demand for infrastructure that allows investors to access global markets through digital platforms while maintaining connections to traditional financial assets.

Tokenization Market Gains Institutional Attention

The partnership arrives during a period of rapid growth for tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), one of the fastest-growing segments within the digital asset industry. Since launching in June 2025, xStocks has expanded from a limited selection of U.S. stocks and ETFs to more than 500 tokenized assets.

According to the company, the platform has processed more than $35 billion in transaction volume, demonstrating significant market interest in blockchain-based representations of traditional securities.

Institutional investors are increasingly exploring tokenization because blockchain infrastructure can potentially improve settlement speed, transparency, and accessibility. However, adoption remains dependent on regulatory approval, custody standards, and market infrastructure development.

Regulatory Frameworks Will Determine Global Adoption

The expansion of tokenized equities introduces new regulatory challenges as financial authorities evaluate how blockchain-based securities should be classified and supervised. Although xStocks are designed to maintain direct backing through regulated custody, each market requires compliance with local securities regulations.

GTN’s infrastructure supports access across more than 90 markets and multiple financial instruments, allowing platforms such as Kraken to expand without building separate technology systems for every jurisdiction. This infrastructure approach may accelerate institutional adoption by reducing operational complexity.

For professional investors, the success of tokenized assets will depend not only on technological innovation but also on regulatory clarity, investor protections, and integration with existing financial systems.

Looking ahead, investors will monitor Kraken’s global xStocks expansion, regulatory developments in key financial markets, and broader institutional adoption of tokenized assets. As blockchain technology continues moving closer to traditional finance, tokenization could become an important bridge between digital asset infrastructure and global capital markets, although long-term growth will depend on regulatory acceptance and sustainable market demand.
