SKN | Ledger Wallet Attack Raises Supply-Chain Fears in Europe as AI Uncovers 18 Trillion XRP Bug

Key Takeaways

  • A suspected hardware-wallet supply-chain attack has reportedly reached Europe after estimated losses of $93.4 million among users linked to an Asian reseller, raising concerns about device integrity.
  • AI-assisted security research uncovered an XRP Ledger vulnerability that could theoretically have created 18 trillion XRP, approximately 184 times its intended 100 billion token supply.
  • The Ledger reports remain under investigation, while the XRP flaw was patched in September with no evidence of exploitation on public networks, highlighting distinct risks across crypto infrastructure.

Two security developments have put crypto infrastructure under renewed scrutiny: reports of tampered Ledger hardware wallets appearing in Europe and the disclosure of a critical XRP Ledger software vulnerability discovered with artificial intelligence assistance. Together, the incidents demonstrate how digital-asset security depends on both trustworthy physical devices and the integrity of blockchain code, even as institutional participation expands.

Ledger Supply-Chain Concerns Extend Beyond Asia

Reports published on October 11 described a European user who said a Ledger hardware wallet purchased from electronics retailer MediaMarkt contained an unauthorized electronic implant. The device reportedly resembled hardware associated with a separate incident involving Asian reseller CryptoBilis, where estimated losses reached $93.4 million.

The reported European device had not been linked conclusively to stolen funds, and Ledger had not confirmed that it belonged to the same campaign. Investigators have suggested that unauthorized components could potentially compromise sensitive wallet information during setup, allowing attackers to target assets held by users.

The distinction between a compromised device and a compromised blockchain is important. Hardware wallets protect private keys, but they cannot guarantee security if a device has been tampered with before reaching its owner. For investors holding substantial digital-asset balances, supply-chain integrity is therefore a separate risk from exchange security or network consensus.

AI Uncovers a Potentially Critical XRP Ledger Bug

Separately, security firm Veria AI reported that its AI-assisted research identified an integer-overflow vulnerability in the XRP Ledger payment engine. Under specially constructed conditions, the flaw could have enabled an attacker to create approximately 18 trillion spendable XRP in a single transaction—184 times the network’s intended maximum supply of 100 billion tokens.

The potential exposure was estimated at approximately $94 billion based on the market value cited by researchers, rather than representing an actual financial loss. The vulnerability reportedly dated to 2015 and involved payment calculations that could overflow when processing hundreds of specially arranged order-book offers.

RippleX addressed the flaw in the xrpld 3.4.1 release on September 25, 2026. Developers reported no evidence that it had been exploited on a public network. Veria AI reportedly received a $250,000 bug bounty, underscoring the financial incentives supporting responsible vulnerability disclosure.

What the Incidents Mean for Crypto Investors

The two cases expose different layers of risk. Hardware attacks target the devices and private keys through which users control assets; protocol vulnerabilities threaten the rules governing transactions and balances. Both can undermine confidence, but neither automatically establishes that an entire network or wallet product is compromised.

AI-assisted security research may help identify defects that conventional testing misses, although automated discovery does not replace independent verification, rigorous testing or coordinated remediation.

Security Verification Becomes a Competitive Priority

Investors and custodians will be watching for confirmed findings from the Ledger investigation, further evidence of affected devices and continued testing of the XRP Ledger patch. The broader lesson is that crypto security requires layered controls, transparent incident reporting and verifiable remediation. As digital assets become more integrated into institutional portfolios, the ability to detect and contain infrastructure failures will remain central to confidence in the market.
