- Robinhood’s third-quarter crypto revenue fell 55% year over year to $120 million, while prediction-market revenue increased sixfold to $173 million.
Regulatory Uncertainty Remains a Barrier to Tokenization
The future of tokenized equities in the United States may depend on whether regulators can establish a durable framework for blockchain-based securities. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has welcomed the Securities and Exchange Commission’s temporary innovation exemption but warned that uncertainty over the rules’ long-term status could discourage investors from committing substantial capital.
Speaking during Robinhood’s third-quarter earnings call, Tenev said the exemption represents progress but argued that additional rulemaking or legislation will be necessary to give investors and market participants greater confidence.
He highlighted the importance of knowing how the regulatory environment may evolve over the next several years. Without that clarity, investors may hesitate to place significant assets into tokenized financial products, even if temporary authorization creates opportunities for experimentation.
The issue is particularly relevant as financial firms explore blockchain-based representations of traditional securities. Tokenization can enable shares or other financial interests to be represented and transferred on blockchain infrastructure, potentially changing how markets handle settlement, access and ownership records. However, the legal rights attached to these products remain central to their regulatory treatment.
Traditional Issuers Challenge Tokenized Stock Offerings
The expansion of tokenized equities has also encountered resistance from established companies and market participants. Microsoft, Alphabet and Goldman Sachs were among 16 companies that objected to plans for offering their shares through the proposed OKX-ICE venue. AMC CEO Adam Aron separately criticized Robinhood’s tokenized stock products.
These objections illustrate a key challenge for tokenization platforms: offering blockchain-based exposure to publicly traded companies does not necessarily confer the same rights as holding conventional shares.
Robinhood offers approximately 200 stock tokens on Robinhood Chain. According to the source report, the products are backed by underlying shares but structured as tokenized debt securities. They provide economic exposure to the referenced assets without granting the same shareholder rights associated with conventional stock ownership.
That structure also creates a regulatory distinction. The SEC’s innovation exemption requires tokenized securities to preserve equivalent rights, including dividend and voting rights. As a result, Robinhood’s existing products do not qualify under the exemption described in the report.
Tenev said Robinhood expects to share more information about its US tokenization plans in the near future. For private-company stock tokens, the company intends to pursue launches in international markets, subject to applicable regulatory arrangements. In the United States, it is still working to identify an approach that complies with existing accreditation requirements.
Tokenized Equities Market Faces a Long-Term Growth Opportunity
Despite regulatory and issuer resistance, forecasts suggest the market could expand significantly if legal and operational barriers ease. Binance Research projects that tokenized equities could reach $349 billion by 2030 under its base-case scenario, compared with $4.43 billion as of September 15.
The projection points to the potential scale of the opportunity, although it remains a forecast rather than a confirmed outcome. Achieving that growth will likely depend on regulatory clarity, issuer participation, investor demand and the ability of tokenized products to meet the legal requirements governing traditional securities.
For Robinhood and other platforms, the challenge is therefore not limited to building the technology. A viable market also requires confidence that tokenized instruments will retain a stable legal status and clearly defined investor protections.
Robinhood Crypto Revenue Declines as Prediction Markets Expand
Robinhood’s tokenization comments came alongside mixed third-quarter results across its trading businesses. Cryptocurrency revenue fell 55% year over year to $120 million, while crypto notional trading volume declined 38% to $50 billion.
Trading volume on the Robinhood app dropped 48% to $21 billion. Bitstamp, which is also part of the company’s business, recorded a 28% decline to $29 billion.
Prediction markets delivered a contrasting result. Revenue from event contracts increased sixfold to $173 million, while the number of contracts traded rose more than sevenfold to 16.4 billion. The figures indicate that activity across Robinhood’s product categories moved in different directions during the quarter.
Across the broader business, total net revenue increased 12% to a record $1.42 billion, although the result fell short of analyst expectations. Adjusted earnings per share reached $0.60, missing estimates by $0.04.
Outlook
Robinhood’s tokenization strategy will depend on whether US regulators move beyond temporary relief toward a framework that offers longer-term certainty. Clear rules governing ownership rights, issuer participation and investor eligibility could help establish the conditions for broader adoption. Until then, tokenized equities may continue to face a gap between their technological potential and the confidence required to attract substantial investment. Meanwhile, declining crypto activity and expanding prediction-market revenue highlight the importance of diversification across Robinhood’s trading businesses.
