THORChain has suspended cross-chain swaps across several major blockchain networks after an Ethereum block reorganization exposed a vulnerability in the protocol’s refund mechanism. The emergency response has created an unusual intersection between infrastructure security and illicit cryptocurrency flows, as the disruption may also have slowed efforts to move funds stolen in the recent Binance security breach.
The incident highlights the operational risks facing decentralized finance protocols that connect multiple blockchain networks. It also renews debate over whether permissionless infrastructure should intervene when its services are used to transfer assets associated with criminal activity.
Ethereum Reorganization Exposes Refund Vulnerability
According to THORChain, the incident began at 11:34 UTC on Saturday, when a one-block reorganization on Ethereum removed a 10 ETH deposit that the protocol had already credited.
A block reorganization occurs when a blockchain replaces a recently recorded block with a competing version. In this case, Ethereum no longer recognized the original deposit, even though THORChain had already processed it internally.
The subsequent swap failed to satisfy its price limit, prompting THORChain to issue a refund against funds that its vault had not actually received. The sender’s original deposit was also refunded, resulting in an additional payout of 10 ETH.
The unexpected payment triggered an automatic safety pause.
THORChain’s team warned that the underlying flaw could potentially be exploited through a similar sequence of events. Because the vulnerability involves a mismatch between an external blockchain’s transaction history and the protocol’s internal accounting, a malicious actor could attempt another transaction using the same nonce and receive funds from THORChain vaults.
The team emphasized the risk following the public disclosure of the issue, indicating that transactions involving reorganizations on external networks could create opportunities for unauthorized payouts.
Swaps Suspended Across 10 Blockchain Networks
In response, THORChain node operators paused swaps involving assets across 10 networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Tron.
Trading continued on Avalanche, Base and XRP, according to the protocol’s network status information. The broader suspension is intended to prevent further exposure while operators assess the affected networks.
THORChain stated that node operators would determine when individual chains could safely resume operations.
The selective approach reflects the interconnected nature of cross-chain infrastructure. A vulnerability affecting transaction verification or refund processing on one network can create risks for assets held and transferred through a broader settlement system.
The duration of the suspension will therefore depend on the protocol’s ability to assess the vulnerability and establish that affected networks can operate without exposing vaults to similar refund discrepancies.
Emergency Suspension Disrupts Movement of Binance Hack Funds
The operational disruption also affected cryptocurrency movements associated with the recent Binance hack, which involved approximately $6.3 billion in stolen funds.
Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis said THORChain’s emergency pause inadvertently delayed efforts to launder a significant portion of the stolen assets.
The firm explained that suspending cross-chain swaps prevented all users, including actors associated with North Korean money-laundering operations, from accessing a majority of THORChain’s bridges.
The disruption was particularly relevant because North Korean-linked hackers have previously used THORChain to exchange cryptocurrencies following major attacks.
Chainalysis noted that the restrictions would remain effective until the affected services returned online, limiting the ability of both legitimate users and malicious actors to conduct cross-chain transactions.
The incident demonstrates how an infrastructure-level security response can have consequences beyond the immediate technical problem, including disrupting the movement of funds connected to cybercrime.
FBI Pressure Raises Questions About Permissionless Infrastructure
The suspension occurred amid growing pressure from US authorities on cryptocurrency infrastructure providers to restrict transactions associated with the Binance breach.
On Saturday, the FBI urged THORChain node operators, decentralized finance services and other virtual asset providers to block transactions linked to addresses used by the North Korea-associated TraderTraitor group.
The request adds to the scrutiny facing decentralized protocols that facilitate cryptocurrency transfers without relying on centralized intermediaries to approve individual transactions.
THORChain has maintained that its role is to provide neutral, permissionless infrastructure. Its third-quarter report reiterated this position despite pressure surrounding the movement of stolen assets through the protocol.
Founder John-Paul Thorbjornsen also defended the network’s commitment to permissionless settlement, arguing that taking the protocol offline in response to external pressure would undermine its fundamental purpose.
His position reflects a broader debate within decentralized finance: whether protocols should prioritize unrestricted access to financial infrastructure or introduce controls when transactions are associated with illicit activity.
Outlook
THORChain’s immediate priority is to address the refund vulnerability and establish the conditions under which suspended networks can safely resume operations. The incident also exposes a structural challenge for decentralized infrastructure providers: maintaining permissionless access while responding to security threats and law-enforcement requests involving stolen assets. For the broader digital asset industry, the outcome may influence how cross-chain protocols approach transaction verification, emergency controls and accountability without fundamentally changing their operating models.
