Key Points:
- Traditional-asset perpetual futures accounted for 23.5% of trading volume across six major exchange groups in August 2026, up from 0.5% in November 2025.
- Trading in stock, ETF, index, gold, and oil-linked perpetual contracts reached approximately $778 billion in August, with Binance handling about 55% of the total.
- On Hyperliquid, traditional-asset perpetuals represented 35.2% of platform volume, while markets listed through trade.xyz reached 85% of the volume of Hyperliquid’s native Bitcoin perpetual contract.
Traditional financial assets are rapidly expanding their presence on cryptocurrency trading platforms, marking a shift in how traders access global markets. A report from Glassnode and Fasanara Digital found that perpetual futures linked to stocks, exchange-traded funds, indices, gold, and oil accounted for 23.5% of volume across six major crypto exchange groups in August 2026, as Bitcoin faced renewed selling pressure and broader market uncertainty.
Traditional-Asset Derivatives Reach $778 Billion
The growth has been substantial. According to the report, traditional-asset perpetual futures generated approximately $778 billion in trading volume in August 2026, compared with just $23.5 billion in November 2025. Their share of total perpetual trading increased from 0.5% to 23.5% over the same period.
Perpetual futures are derivatives without a fixed expiration date, allowing traders to maintain leveraged positions subject to margin requirements and funding payments. Bringing traditional assets into this structure gives market participants access to instruments linked to equities and commodities through platforms commonly associated with cryptocurrency trading.
The change also reflects weakness in crypto-native derivatives activity. Trading volume in crypto-asset perpetuals fell 49% between November 2025 and August 2026, according to the report. However, declining crypto volume alone does not explain the entire shift: Glassnode and Fasanara estimated that traditional-asset perpetuals would still have represented 13.5% of August volume even if crypto trading had remained at its November level.
The firms described their estimates as conservative because contracts they could not classify were counted as crypto rather than traditional assets.
Binance Leads as Exchanges Compete for Market Share
Binance captured approximately 55% of traditional-asset perpetual volume in August, equivalent to around $429 billion. The exchange launched its first contract in this category in December 2025, yet rapidly established a leading position.
OKX ranked second, with slightly more than 15% of the market, while Hyperliquid accounted for approximately 11%. These figures suggest that established centralized exchanges and blockchain-based trading venues are competing for demand from traders who want exposure to both digital assets and conventional financial markets.
The composition of each platform’s business differed. Traditional assets accounted for 35.2% of Hyperliquid’s perpetual volume, compared with 27.6% on Binance. The difference indicates that traditional-asset derivatives have become particularly significant within Hyperliquid’s trading ecosystem.
Hyperliquid’s Expansion Highlights On-Chain Innovation
Hyperliquid’s HIP-3 system, launched in October 2025, enables users to create perpetual markets for assets with reliable price feeds. This structure allows third-party markets to develop alongside the platform’s native cryptocurrency products.
According to the report, markets listed on trade.xyz, an exchange built using HIP-3, reached trading volume equivalent to 85% of Hyperliquid’s own Bitcoin perpetual contract. At the beginning of 2026, their volume had been less than one-tenth of the Bitcoin contract’s activity.
Popular products included memory-chip stocks, leveraged semiconductor and South Korea-focused ETFs, and commodities such as gold, silver, and crude oil. These instruments show that traders are using crypto-market infrastructure to express views on a wider range of economic and financial themes.
What the Shift Means for Crypto Markets
The expansion of traditional-asset perpetuals could diversify exchange revenues and attract traders whose interests extend beyond cryptocurrency prices. It may also intensify competition among platforms offering continuous trading, leverage, and access to global markets.
However, rapid growth does not eliminate the risks associated with derivatives. Leverage, liquidation mechanisms, funding rates, liquidity gaps, and the reliability of underlying price feeds can amplify losses, particularly during periods of market stress. Bitcoin’s reported decline of more than 2% over 24 hours, alongside bearish retail sentiment on Stocktwits, illustrates the uncertain backdrop in which this market expansion is taking place.
The next test is whether traditional-asset perpetuals can sustain their growth through changing market conditions. Trading volumes, liquidity, regulatory treatment, and risk controls will help determine whether the sector becomes a durable bridge between crypto-native platforms and conventional finance—or remains heavily dependent on speculative trading cycles.
