SKN | Why Are Bitcoin and Ethereum Sliding as U.S.-Iran Tensions and Fed Rate Risks Intensify?

Key Points:

  • Bitcoin opened at $79,093.85 on September 8, down 1.6% from Monday’s opening price, before falling to $78,370.62.
  • Ethereum opened at $2,489.84, down 1%, and edged lower to $2,473.66 as geopolitical and monetary-policy risks weighed on digital assets.
  • Rising oil prices, renewed inflation concerns and a roughly 60% market-implied probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike are increasing pressure on crypto valuations.

Bitcoin and Ethereum moved lower Tuesday as renewed U.S.-Iran military exchanges intensified pressure across risk assets. The crypto decline comes alongside a sharp rise in oil prices toward $100 a barrel, raising concerns that a prolonged geopolitical shock could reinforce inflation and complicate the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.

Bitcoin Falls Below $79,000 as Risk Appetite Weakens

Bitcoin opened Tuesday at $79,093.85, representing a 1.6% decline from Monday’s opening level. By 7:20 a.m. ET, BTC had fallen further to $78,370.62, extending a pullback from the more than three-month high of approximately $82,000 reached the previous week.

Despite the short-term weakness, Bitcoin’s broader performance remained relatively strong. Its opening price was approximately 21.9% higher than one month earlier, although it remained 28.8% below its October 2025 record of $128,198.07. The divergence illustrates the tension between strong medium-term momentum and renewed short-term macroeconomic pressure.

Ethereum Faces Similar Macro Pressure

Ethereum followed Bitcoin lower. ETH opened at $2,489.84 Tuesday, down 1% from Monday’s opening price, before slipping to $2,473.66 by 7:20 a.m. ET. The move came despite Ethereum’s stronger recent performance, with its opening price approximately 30.1% above its level one month earlier.

For institutional participants, the simultaneous weakness in BTC and ETH highlights how macroeconomic variables continue to influence digital-asset pricing. Rather than trading purely on blockchain-specific developments, major cryptocurrencies remain sensitive to liquidity conditions, interest-rate expectations and changes in global risk appetite.

Oil, Inflation and the Federal Reserve Become Critical Variables

The geopolitical escalation is affecting crypto markets indirectly through energy prices and monetary policy expectations. Fresh attacks and continuing U.S.-Iran fighting have pushed oil prices back toward $100 a barrel, increasing the risk that higher energy costs could feed into inflation. U.S. equities also declined Tuesday as investors assessed the implications of the conflict and higher oil prices.

At the same time, markets are reassessing the Federal Reserve’s next move. The Yahoo Finance report cited a roughly 60% probability of a rate increase at the September meeting, while other market reporting placed the probability at approximately 57%. Higher interest rates can weigh on non-yielding digital assets by increasing the relative attractiveness of interest-bearing instruments.

Looking ahead, the interaction between geopolitical developments, oil prices, inflation data and Federal Reserve expectations will remain central to crypto-market direction. Investors will receive additional U.S. inflation data before the Fed’s two-day meeting begins September 15, potentially providing a clearer indication of whether the current pressure on Bitcoin and Ethereum is a temporary risk-off move or part of a broader reassessment of liquidity conditions.
