Key Points

  • Zimbabwe’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SECZ) has admitted seven fintech projects into its regulatory sandbox.
  • Four of the approved projects focus on asset and securities tokenization, highlighting growing interest in blockchain-based financial innovation.
  • Sandbox participation allows companies to test products under regulatory supervision but does not guarantee full commercial licensing.
  • The initiative aims to encourage innovation while maintaining oversight of emerging financial technologies.

Zimbabwe has taken another step toward fostering financial innovation by admitting seven fintech projects into its regulatory sandbox, with blockchain-based tokenization emerging as the dominant theme among the latest participants.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe (SECZ) approved the inclusion of Zimbabwe Entrepreneurship Exchange, Ndarama Standard, Questview Brokers, Crowdaxe Capital, Procode Platforms, Financial Securities Exchange (FINSEC) and Colmin Resources Zimbabwe.

The selected companies will be permitted to test their products within a supervised regulatory environment before seeking authorization for broader commercial operations.

Tokenization Leads the Latest Cohort

The newest group reflects Zimbabwe’s growing interest in blockchain-powered financial infrastructure.

The approved projects cover a range of financial technologies, including blockchain-based capital raising, crowdfunding platforms, synthetic trading products and the tokenization of assets, securities and infrastructure.

Notably, four of the seven admitted projects focus primarily on tokenization, demonstrating increasing confidence in blockchain technology as a tool for expanding access to investment opportunities and modernizing capital markets.

Tokenization enables traditional assets to be represented digitally on blockchain networks, potentially improving liquidity, transparency and investment accessibility.

Sandbox Testing Does Not Guarantee Licensing

Under the SECZ Regulatory Sandbox Guidelines, participation allows fintech companies to operate under close regulatory supervision while testing innovative financial products in a controlled environment.

However, admission to the sandbox does not automatically grant permission to launch commercial services.

Even after successfully completing the testing phase, participants must still satisfy all regulatory licensing and registration requirements before offering their products to the broader market.

This framework allows regulators to monitor emerging technologies while helping innovators refine their products in compliance with existing financial regulations.

Blockchain Innovation Continues to Grow

Zimbabwe’s latest sandbox approvals mirror a broader global trend as regulators increasingly adopt controlled testing environments for blockchain and digital asset innovation.

Regulatory sandboxes have become an important mechanism for balancing technological development with investor protection, allowing authorities to evaluate new business models before granting full market access.

The emphasis on tokenization also reflects growing international interest in digitizing real-world assets, enabling traditionally illiquid investments to become more accessible through blockchain infrastructure.

As financial institutions and fintech firms continue exploring blockchain applications, tokenization is emerging as one of the sector’s fastest-growing areas.

Outlook

Zimbabwe’s decision to admit seven fintech projects into its regulatory sandbox underscores the country’s commitment to encouraging financial innovation while maintaining regulatory oversight. With tokenization representing the majority of the newly approved initiatives, blockchain technology is becoming an increasingly important part of Zimbabwe’s evolving financial ecosystem. As these projects progress through supervised testing, they could provide valuable insights into how tokenized assets and digital financial services may contribute to the future development of regulated capital markets.
