SKN | Bitcoin Hits $80,000 as ‘Extreme Greed’ Returns to Crypto Markets

Bitcoin has reclaimed the $80,000 level for the first time since May, wiping out roughly three months of losses in a single week as renewed ETF demand, regulatory optimism and shifting macro expectations push cryptocurrency sentiment sharply higher. The move marks a significant change in market psychology, with the Crypto Fear and Greed Index shifting from “neutral” last week to “extreme greed”, raising questions about whether the rally can develop into a sustained recovery or become vulnerable to overheating.

ETF Inflows Signal Renewed Institutional Demand

One of the clearest drivers behind Bitcoin’s rebound has been renewed demand through U.S. spot exchange-traded funds. According to Farside Investors data cited in the source report, Bitcoin ETFs recorded six consecutive days of net inflows, indicating that capital is returning to regulated investment products after a difficult period earlier in the year.

The strength of those flows is important because ETF demand provides a direct channel for institutional and professional investors to gain Bitcoin exposure. The renewed inflows have coincided with Bitcoin’s rapid price recovery, suggesting that the latest advance is being supported by more than retail speculation alone. However, investors will be watching whether the inflow streak continues once the initial momentum surrounding the $80,000 breakout fades.

Regulatory Momentum Adds to the Risk-On Environment

Regulation has also become a constructive factor for market sentiment. Federal regulators are working to address rulemaking gaps left by the Clarity Act, while political support for clearer cryptocurrency rules has strengthened expectations that the U.S. digital-asset market could eventually operate under a more defined framework.

For institutional investors, regulatory clarity can reduce uncertainty surrounding custody, market structure and the treatment of digital assets. That does not eliminate regulatory risk, but it can make the asset class easier to evaluate within traditional portfolio and compliance frameworks. The combination of regulatory progress and strong ETF flows has therefore created a more favorable backdrop for Bitcoin after months of weaker performance.

Strategy’s $1.6 Billion Cash Pool Changes the Playbook

Strategy, one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin, is taking a more cautious approach despite the sharp increase in BTC prices. The company holds approximately 840,447 Bitcoin, worth around $66 billion at recent prices, but did not conduct Bitcoin transactions for two consecutive weeks.

Instead, Strategy established a new $1.6 billion USD Cash pool designed to allow management to respond more quickly to market conditions, including potential dislocations involving Bitcoin or Strategy securities. The pool is separate from the company’s existing $5.1 billion USD Reserve, which is intended primarily to support dividends and interest obligations.

The decision suggests that Strategy is prioritizing flexibility after a period of volatility in both Bitcoin and its preferred securities. Rather than immediately increasing its Bitcoin exposure during a rally, the company is maintaining liquidity that could potentially be deployed if market conditions deteriorate or attractive opportunities emerge.

Extreme Greed Creates a New Test for Bitcoin

Bitcoin’s latest surge has also revived comparisons with other high-performing assets. Over the past decade, Bitcoin has gained approximately 13,429%, slightly exceeding Nvidia’s 13,156% gain through August 23. While such long-term performance highlights Bitcoin’s extraordinary historical appreciation, it also illustrates why investors should distinguish structural adoption from short-term momentum.

The transition from neutral sentiment to extreme greed is itself a warning that expectations have moved rapidly. Bitcoin’s ability to remain above $80,000, sustain ETF inflows and absorb profit-taking will be critical in determining whether the latest rally represents a durable market repricing. If institutional demand persists and regulatory momentum continues, the recovery could broaden; if liquidity weakens or sentiment becomes excessively crowded, volatility could return quickly.
