SKN | Why Has Bitcoin Failed to Rally Despite the $40 Trillion U.S. Debt Burden?

Key Points:

  • U.S. federal debt has surpassed $40 trillion, while the government continues to run a deficit near 6% of GDP.
  • Bitcoin is trading around $80,000, roughly 37% below its record high from last year, challenging the traditional debasement-trade narrative.
  • BloFin argues the debasement trade has entered a “second phase”, where investors are increasingly focused on government efforts to control borrowing costs and Treasury yields.

The U.S. federal debt has crossed $40 trillion, the budget deficit remains close to 6% of GDP and long-term borrowing costs remain elevated. Yet Bitcoin is trading near $80,000, approximately 37% below its record high from last year, raising a fundamental question for crypto investors: why has the expected debasement trade not translated into sustained Bitcoin outperformance?

The Debasement Narrative Faces a New Market Reality

Bitcoin’s traditional macro thesis is relatively straightforward: persistent government deficits and monetary expansion can weaken the purchasing power of fiat currencies, increasing demand for scarce assets with limited supply. Bitcoin, with its predetermined issuance schedule, has frequently been positioned as a digital expression of that scarcity trade.

The current market environment is more complicated. The U.S. government’s debt burden continues to expand, but investors are simultaneously demanding higher compensation for holding long-duration government debt. That has created a tension between the long-term debasement thesis and the short-term opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset such as Bitcoin.

Higher Bond Yields Can Delay Bitcoin’s Macro Trade

BloFin’s analysis describes the current environment as the second phase of the debasement trade. The first phase focused primarily on monetary expansion and the growth of the money supply. The second is increasingly concerned with what governments and central banks do when borrowing costs become politically and economically difficult to sustain.

That distinction is important. If Treasury yields remain elevated, investors can receive comparatively attractive returns from government debt while waiting for clearer evidence of monetary easing. In that environment, the mere existence of $40 trillion in federal debt does not automatically create immediate demand for Bitcoin.

Instead, markets are watching whether policymakers eventually respond to fiscal pressure through measures that suppress borrowing costs, encourage liquidity or otherwise alter the relationship between government debt and interest rates.

Treasury Intervention Becomes Part of the Bitcoin Debate

The changing framework also places greater emphasis on the U.S. Treasury’s attempts to influence liquidity and the long end of the bond market. Treasury buybacks are not equivalent to Federal Reserve quantitative easing, because the Treasury cannot create money. However, BloFin argues that increased intervention can signal a growing willingness to manage borrowing conditions.

The distinction matters for Bitcoin because a sustained ceiling on long-term yields would eventually require stronger policy involvement. A more aggressive version of such intervention could involve Federal Reserve purchases of government debt, potentially creating liquidity conditions that would be considerably more supportive for scarce assets.

Bitcoin Needs Liquidity, Not Just Fiscal Deterioration

The current divergence demonstrates why the debasement thesis cannot be measured by debt growth alone. Bitcoin can remain under pressure even as government liabilities increase if real yields stay attractive, liquidity remains constrained and investors prefer conventional income-producing assets.

For crypto investors and institutions, the key variable is therefore the transmission mechanism between fiscal deterioration and market liquidity. Bitcoin’s next major move may depend less on another debt milestone and more on whether policymakers eventually respond to rising borrowing costs in ways that weaken real yields and redirect capital toward scarce assets.

Going forward, investors will be watching U.S. Treasury yields, real interest rates, fiscal policy, liquidity conditions and Bitcoin’s response to changes in those variables. If borrowing costs remain elevated, the debasement narrative may continue to operate as a longer-term thesis rather than an immediate trading catalyst. If policy intervention eventually lowers real yields, however, the same fiscal pressures that have failed to lift Bitcoin so far could become a much stronger driver of demand.
