Key Points:
- Adam Iza was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for fraud, tax evasion and using off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies to target rivals.
- Iza admitted receiving at least $36.36 million from a scheme involving fraudulent access to Meta advertising accounts and credit lines, while the broader scheme generated more than $37 million.
- The sentence runs concurrently with a 15-year federal term imposed in September for Iza’s role in an attempted Bitcoin robbery, while the court ordered $23.4 million in restitution.
Adam Iza, a 26-year-old who styled himself the “Godfather” of the cryptocurrency world, has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison over a multimillion-dollar fraud and tax-evasion case involving Meta advertising accounts. The case adds to a growing body of U.S. enforcement actions highlighting how financial crime connected to digital-asset figures can extend well beyond traditional crypto transactions into corporate fraud, personal data and financial infrastructure.
How the $37 Million Meta Scheme Worked
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Iza fraudulently gained access to Meta business manager accounts and associated advertising credit lines between 2020 and 2024. He then sold access to the compromised accounts to advertising companies, generating substantial proceeds while Meta customers were billed for advertising expenditures they had not authorized. Meta subsequently refunded affected customers, absorbing the resulting losses.
Iza admitted that he received at least $36.36 million in gross income from the fraud scheme between 2020 and 2023. Prosecutors said the activity resulted in approximately $13.29 million in losses to the Internal Revenue Service, adding a significant tax component to the case.
Restitution and a Second Federal Sentence
U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson ordered Iza to pay $23,402,766 in restitution in addition to the 78-month prison term. Iza had pleaded guilty in January 2025 to conspiracy against rights, wire fraud and tax evasion.
The California sentence will run concurrently with a 15-year federal prison sentence imposed in Connecticut last month for Iza’s role in an attempted Bitcoin robbery that involved the kidnapping of a couple in 2024. Because the sentences overlap, the latest judgment does not add six years to the 15-year term.
The separate Bitcoin case underscores the extent to which authorities have treated alleged criminal activity surrounding Iza as involving both conventional financial fraud and cryptocurrency-related offenses.
Why the Case Matters for Crypto Compliance
For digital-asset investors and institutions, the significance of the case extends beyond the individual sentence. The alleged Meta scheme involved access to financial credit lines, corporate accounts and payment-related infrastructure, illustrating how criminal networks can exploit systems adjacent to crypto rather than blockchain networks themselves.
The DOJ also said Iza used substantial financial resources to employ off-duty former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies to violate the civil rights of people he considered adversaries. Five former deputies have been convicted in connection with the broader conduct.
Enforcement Pressure Extends Beyond Blockchain Transactions
The case reinforces a broader compliance lesson for the crypto industry: regulatory and law-enforcement scrutiny increasingly covers the full financial ecosystem surrounding digital assets. Exchanges, custodians, payment providers and counterparties must contend not only with blockchain transaction monitoring but also with fraud, sanctions, identity, tax and source-of-funds risks.
For institutional participants, the next stage will be whether enforcement agencies continue pursuing individuals and businesses that use crypto infrastructure alongside conventional financial systems for illicit activity. Iza’s concurrent sentences also demonstrate that digital-asset-related crimes can produce significant consequences across multiple jurisdictions, making robust compliance and counterparty diligence increasingly important as crypto becomes more integrated with mainstream finance.
