SKN | Crypto Giants Expand Beyond Trading, but Coinbase, Robinhood and Circle Still Face Cyclical Revenue Pressures

Key Points:

  • Coinbase is expanding through stablecoins, payments, derivatives and prediction markets, but its third-quarter revenue remained approximately flat at $1.2 billion despite growth in newer business lines.
  • Robinhood generated $173 million from prediction markets in Q3, while cryptocurrency transaction revenue fell 55% year over year to $120 million.
  • Circle reported $865 million in third-quarter revenue and reserve income, but a $182 million ARC token presale materially boosted its results, exposing the difference between headline growth and recurring business performance.

The cryptocurrency industry is developing a broader commercial model, but its largest publicly traded companies have yet to demonstrate that diversification can fully insulate earnings from market cycles. Coinbase, Robinhood and Circle are expanding into stablecoin infrastructure, payments, derivatives, prediction markets and blockchain services. Their latest third-quarter results show that these businesses are creating additional revenue opportunities, although the financial contribution of newer products varies considerably and traditional cryptocurrency trading remains an important source of exposure.

Coinbase Builds a Broader Revenue Base Beyond Spot Trading

Coinbase’s third-quarter revenue reached approximately $1.2 billion, remaining broadly flat despite a 10% decline in total cryptocurrency market trading volume. Transaction revenue stood at $590 million, while subscription and services revenue increased 3% to $570 million, accounting for approximately 49% of net revenue.

The subscription and services segment includes stablecoin-related revenue, staking, custody and financing activities. Stablecoin revenue increased 5% to $307 million, supported by higher average USDC balances held within Coinbase products. The average balance reached a record $22 billion, demonstrating the commercial importance of Coinbase’s relationship with Circle’s dollar-pegged stablecoin.

Prediction markets are another emerging revenue source. Coinbase reported more than $200 million in annualized revenue from the business, alongside an increase of more than 60% in daily prediction-market traders. More than half of the contracts traded during the quarter were unrelated to sports. These developments suggest that Coinbase is extending its platform beyond conventional cryptocurrency transactions, although annualized revenue should not be confused with revenue actually earned during the quarter.

Robinhood Shows How Diversification Can Offset Crypto Weakness

Robinhood’s third-quarter results illustrate the contrast between expanding financial services and declining cryptocurrency activity. Crypto transaction revenue fell 55% year over year to $120 million, while cryptocurrency trading volume declined 38% to $50 billion. Crypto accounted for only 8.4% of the company’s $1.42 billion in total quarterly revenue, compared with approximately 21% a year earlier.

Other business lines provided a significant counterweight. Prediction markets generated $173 million, more than six times the year-earlier figure. Options revenue increased 31% to $399 million, while equities revenue rose 41% to $121 million. These figures indicate that Robinhood’s broader trading platform can generate revenue even when cryptocurrency participation weakens.

The company is also developing its blockchain infrastructure through Robinhood Chain. During its first quarter operating on mainnet, the network processed more than $80 billion in decentralized exchange trading volume and generated over $50 million in chain fees. However, those fees should not automatically be treated as recognized corporate revenue. The distinction matters when evaluating the financial contribution of blockchain expansion.

Circle’s Earnings Highlight the Difference Between Growth and Recurring Income

Circle reported $865 million in third-quarter revenue and reserve income, an increase of 17% from a year earlier. Net income from continuing operations reached $226 million, up 5%, while USDC on-chain transaction volume climbed 49% to $13.9 trillion. Average USDC in circulation increased 8% to $73.3 billion.

However, the quality of the headline revenue growth requires closer examination. Circle generated $182 million from a private presale of its ARC token, a one-time contribution associated with its blockchain expansion. CoinDesk’s analysis of the earnings release estimated that, excluding the presale, total revenue and reserve income would have declined 8% year over year to $683 million, while adjusted EBITDA would have fallen 21% to $135 million.

This distinction exposes an important challenge for stablecoin businesses. USDC adoption and transaction activity can expand while the economics of reserve income remain sensitive to interest rates, distribution costs and competition. Circle also reduced its workforce by approximately 5% during the quarter, reflecting efforts to align expenses with its operating priorities.

New Business Models Must Prove Their Earnings Resilience

The latest results suggest that crypto companies are gradually becoming more diversified financial and technology platforms. Coinbase is developing stablecoin and prediction-market revenue, Robinhood is benefiting from options and event-based trading, and Circle is extending its infrastructure into payments and blockchain services. These developments broaden the industry’s potential sources of income beyond cryptocurrency exchange fees.

Nevertheless, diversification does not automatically eliminate cyclical exposure. Prediction markets remain dependent on customer activity, stablecoin reserve economics are influenced by interest rates, and blockchain infrastructure requires sustained adoption before its commercial contribution can be assessed over time. Investors will therefore need to distinguish between recurring operating revenue, activity-based fees and exceptional transactions such as token presales. The next earnings cycles will be important in determining whether these companies can turn their expanding product portfolios into durable profitability rather than simply replacing one form of market dependence with another.
