Key Points

  • Balance Coin (BLC) plunged more than 99% after a reported $915,000 exploit targeting the Balance Protocol ecosystem.
  • Blockchain security researchers linked the incident to an attack on 42DAO, the decentralized autonomous organization governing the protocol.
  • Attackers allegedly minted millions of BLC tokens before exchanging them for Binance-pegged USDT and BTCB on BNB Chain.
  • The incident highlights the ongoing security risks facing algorithmic stablecoins and decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.

Balance Coin Suffers Near-Total Collapse

Balance Coin, the algorithmic stablecoin underpinning the Balance Protocol, has lost virtually all of its value following a reported security breach that compromised the protocol’s ecosystem.

The token fell from nearly $1.00 to approximately $0.0014, representing a decline of more than 99% and effectively wiping out its dollar peg.

The collapse follows reports that attackers exploited vulnerabilities connected to 42DAO, the decentralized autonomous organization responsible for governing the Balance Protocol and its native BLC token.

Security Firms Trace Alleged Exploit

Blockchain security firms quickly identified suspicious onchain activity following the sudden price collapse.

According to security researchers, the exploit resulted in losses estimated at approximately $915,000.

Investigators said the attack occurred on the BNB Chain, where attackers allegedly manipulated the protocol to create new BLC tokens that should not have existed.

The unauthorized token creation enabled the attackers to rapidly extract value from the ecosystem before the market reacted.

Millions of Tokens Allegedly Minted

Onchain analysis indicates the first attack involved the minting of approximately 4.5 million BLC from a null address.

Those newly created tokens were transferred to PancakeSwap V2, where they were exchanged for Binance-pegged USDT (BSC-USD) and Binance Bitcoin (BTCB).

Roughly two hours later, investigators identified a second transaction following a similar pattern.

During the second attack, an additional 5,900 BLC tokens were reportedly minted and exchanged for more BSC-USD and BTCB, allowing the attacker to extract further value from the protocol.

The sequence of transactions rapidly undermined market confidence and triggered the stablecoin’s dramatic depeg.

Algorithmic Stablecoins Face Continued Challenges

Unlike fiat-backed stablecoins that maintain reserves of cash or government securities, algorithmic stablecoins rely on software mechanisms, token economics and smart contracts to preserve their value.

While these systems can function under normal market conditions, they are often more vulnerable to governance failures, smart contract exploits and liquidity shocks.

Security incidents can quickly undermine confidence in an algorithmic stablecoin’s ability to maintain its peg, leading to rapid price collapses and reduced liquidity.

The latest incident adds to a growing list of challenges facing decentralized stablecoin projects.

DeFi Security Remains a Critical Concern

The Balance Protocol exploit underscores the continued importance of smart contract security within decentralized finance.

As DeFi platforms grow increasingly sophisticated, attackers continue searching for vulnerabilities in governance systems, token issuance mechanisms and protocol logic.

Developers across the blockchain industry have responded by expanding security audits, bug bounty programs and real-time monitoring systems, yet exploits remain one of the sector’s most persistent risks.

The incident serves as another reminder that protocol security remains fundamental to maintaining user confidence in decentralized financial infrastructure.

Outlook

The collapse of Balance Coin following the reported exploit highlights the ongoing risks associated with algorithmic stablecoins and decentralized governance systems. As investigators continue examining the incident, the event is likely to reinforce calls for stronger smart contract security, improved protocol auditing and more resilient stablecoin designs as the decentralized finance ecosystem continues to mature.
