Key Points:

  • Two suspects in a quadruple homicide in Mexico allegedly targeted a cold wallet they believed contained millions of dollars in Bitcoin.
  • Prosecutors accuse the men of killing four people, including a pregnant woman and the daughter of a musician, during the alleged robbery attempt.
  • The case highlights the growing physical security risks facing cryptocurrency holders as so-called wrench attacks increasingly target people believed to control digital assets.

Bitcoin Wallet Allegedly Motives Deadly Attack

Two men in Mexico are facing criminal proceedings over the alleged killing of four people in a case prosecutors say was connected to an attempt to obtain a cryptocurrency cold wallet containing millions of dollars in Bitcoin.

According to reporting by La Jornada citing an update from the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico, the suspects allegedly sought access to the wallet and believed it contained a substantial Bitcoin balance.

Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, whose surnames were not disclosed, are scheduled to appear at a court hearing Wednesday. A judge is expected to determine whether sufficient evidence exists for criminal proceedings against the two suspects to continue.

The State of Mexico prosecutor’s office announced their arrests on Sept. 2.

Four People Allegedly Killed Inside Home

Prosecutors accuse the suspects of killing Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for Mexican rock band Camilo Séptimo, his pregnant wife, his daughter and an employee at the family’s home in Atizapán de Zaragoza.

The family’s golden retriever was also killed in the incident.

Mexico’s Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said one of the suspects was a business associate of one of the victims and allegedly used that relationship to gain access to the residence.

If convicted, the suspects could face between 25 and 70 years in prison for each homicide victim, according to La Jornada’s reporting on the prosecutor’s case.

The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings, and the court hearing will determine whether prosecutors have presented sufficient evidence to move the case forward.

Physical Attacks on Crypto Holders Increasing

The alleged incident falls within a broader pattern of physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders.

Known as “wrench attacks,” these incidents involve threats, kidnapping or physical violence intended to force victims to surrender cryptocurrency, private keys or access to digital wallets.

The rise of self-custodied cryptocurrency has created a particular security challenge because ownership of digital assets can potentially be controlled through information that is portable and difficult to recover once exposed.

According to blockchain security firm CertiK, 52 wrench attacks were publicly reported worldwide during the first half of 2026, up 33.3% from 39 incidents during the same period in 2025.

Home invasions targeting suspected cryptocurrency owners accounted for 20 of those incidents during the first half of 2026, compared with just one publicly reported case during the same period a year earlier.

The Security Cost of Self-Custody

The Mexico case underscores a less-discussed dimension of Bitcoin security: protecting the individual who controls the private keys.

Cold wallets are designed to keep cryptocurrency credentials offline and reduce exposure to online attacks. However, offline storage does not prevent criminals from targeting the people believed to possess access to those assets.

As Bitcoin holdings become more visible and individual balances can sometimes be inferred from public blockchain activity, physical security can become an increasingly important component of digital-asset custody.

For cryptocurrency users, the distinction between securing a wallet and securing access to that wallet’s owner is becoming increasingly significant.

Outlook

The alleged Mexico attack illustrates how the value of cryptocurrency can create risks beyond cybercrime, particularly when criminals believe substantial digital assets can be accessed through physical coercion. As wrench attacks increase, the security conversation around Bitcoin is likely to expand beyond private-key technology toward personal privacy, operational security and the protection of individuals associated with significant crypto holdings.
