SKN | Quantum Alliance Warns 6.4 Million Bitcoin Face Future Security Risks

Key Points:

  • Nine cryptocurrency companies have formed the Quantum Alliance to coordinate preparations for potential quantum-computing attacks against blockchain networks.
  • An estimated 6.4 million BTC, representing approximately 30.2% of Bitcoin’s supply, could be exposed to future attacks because their associated public keys are already visible.
  • Industry participants disagree over the timeline for a practical quantum threat and whether potentially vulnerable Bitcoin should be frozen or moved to quantum-resistant wallets.

The cryptocurrency industry is accelerating preparations for a potential quantum-computing threat, as nine companies establish a collaborative initiative to strengthen blockchain security. The formation of the Quantum Alliance comes amid renewed debate over Bitcoin’s long-term cryptographic resilience, including estimates that millions of coins could face exposure if sufficiently powerful quantum computers become available. However, the risk remains prospective: current quantum computers cannot break Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections at the scale required to enable such attacks.

Quantum Alliance Targets Blockchain Security Standards

Nine cryptocurrency companies have joined forces to prepare for possible quantum attacks. Participating organizations include Hacken, Midnight Foundation, Quantus and Postquant Labs. The initiative aims to develop common security standards, testing guidelines and recommendations for migrating blockchain networks toward quantum-resistant cryptographic systems.

The coordination effort reflects a technical challenge that extends beyond Bitcoin. Many blockchain networks rely on cryptographic signatures that establish ownership and authorize transactions. A sufficiently capable quantum computer running an appropriate algorithm could potentially derive private keys from exposed public keys, undermining the security assumptions supporting these systems.

For institutional investors, custodians and infrastructure providers, the issue involves more than future computing capabilities. Preparing for cryptographic migration may require changes to wallet systems, custody procedures, network protocols and operational security. Coordinated standards could help reduce fragmentation, although implementation across decentralized networks remains complex.

Why Millions of Bitcoin Could Face Exposure

The report estimates that approximately 6.4 million BTC, or 30.2% of the total supply, are associated with public keys that have been exposed. The estimate includes roughly 1.1 million bitcoin commonly attributed to Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Public-key exposure does not mean these coins can be stolen today. It identifies a potential vulnerability if future quantum systems become capable of defeating the relevant cryptography. The distinction is important because the estimate describes possible future exposure, not confirmed losses or an active theft event.

Experts also disagree about when a cryptographically relevant quantum computer might emerge. Richard Carback, chief technology officer of Postquant Labs, considers 2028 a realistic possibility for such a development. Other industry participants emphasize that no reliable date can be established, making preparedness difficult to separate from uncertainty about the pace of technological progress.

The Debate Over Freezing or Moving Vulnerable BTC

The proposed responses raise difficult questions for Bitcoin governance. One option would be to encourage holders to migrate vulnerable assets to quantum-resistant systems before the technology becomes practical. Another, more controversial possibility is freezing coins considered vulnerable if their owners fail to move them.

Bryn Bennett, chief revenue officer at The Vault, has argued that decisions about freezing assets should be left to Bitcoin’s governance process. Carback favors moving vulnerable bitcoin rather than freezing it. These positions reflect a broader tension between protecting network security and preserving users’ control over their assets.

A freeze could potentially prevent unauthorized transfers involving vulnerable coins, but it would also restrict legitimate owners and require agreement on how vulnerability is defined. Any such proposal could therefore create significant disagreement over property rights, network neutrality and the limits of protocol-level intervention.

Migration Readiness Becomes the Critical Issue

Looking ahead, the central question is whether blockchain developers, wallet providers and custodians can coordinate a transition before quantum computing reaches the necessary capability. The Quantum Alliance’s planned standards and migration guidance may help establish a common technical foundation, but the effectiveness of any response will depend on implementation and broad network participation.

For crypto investors, the 6.4 million BTC estimate should be understood as a warning about future cryptographic exposure rather than evidence of an immediate security breakdown. Monitoring developments in quantum hardware, post-quantum cryptography and blockchain governance will be essential as the industry works to preserve digital-asset security over the long term.
