Key Points

  • Nine Swiss companies have begun testing CHFD, a Swiss franc-denominated stablecoin designed for programmable payments and digital asset settlement.
  • Financial market operator SIX and payment app TWINT have joined the initiative, expanding participation beyond the banks involved at launch.
  • The pilot will assess whether programmable stablecoin payments can reduce online marketplace fraud, improve access to event tickets and streamline public-sector payments.

Switzerland Moves Swiss Franc Stablecoin Into Live Testing

A Swiss initiative exploring a domestic stablecoin has entered its testing phase, with nine companies participating in a sandbox focused on programmable payments and digital asset settlement.

The pilot centers on CHFD, a stablecoin denominated in Swiss francs. Participants will examine how programmable payment functionality could be applied to practical use cases across commerce, ticketing and public services.

The initiative reflects Switzerland’s broader effort to evaluate how blockchain-based financial infrastructure can operate within established financial markets while maintaining the stability and familiarity of the Swiss franc.

SIX and TWINT Join the Sandbox

Financial market operator SIX and payment application TWINT are the newest participants in the initiative, adding established financial-market and consumer-payment infrastructure to the testing environment.

The sandbox originally launched in April with several Swiss banks participating. The addition of SIX and TWINT broadens the range of institutions involved in assessing how a Swiss franc stablecoin could function across different stages of the payments ecosystem.

Rather than focusing solely on cryptocurrency trading, the pilot is designed around potential applications where programmable money could provide additional controls or automation.

Programmable Payments Put to the Test

One of the central questions is whether programmable payments can address specific inefficiencies and risks in existing payment processes.

The pilot will examine whether CHFD could help reduce fraud on online marketplaces by embedding payment conditions into transactions. Programmable functionality could potentially allow funds to be released only when predefined conditions are satisfied.

Another test case involves event ticket distribution, where programmable payments could be used to support fairer access to tickets.

The initiative will also assess applications for public payments, exploring whether programmable settlement could make certain government-related transactions more efficient.

From Stablecoin Concept to Financial Infrastructure

The testing phase is significant because it moves the Swiss franc stablecoin concept beyond theoretical discussions toward controlled experimentation with established financial institutions.

The participation of SIX and TWINT also provides an opportunity to evaluate how blockchain-based settlement could interact with existing market and payment infrastructure.

For Switzerland, the sandbox offers a practical environment to determine where stablecoin technology provides meaningful advantages and where conventional payment systems may remain more appropriate.

Outlook

The CHFD sandbox will provide an early indication of whether Swiss franc-based stablecoins can deliver practical benefits beyond cryptocurrency markets. If the pilot demonstrates measurable improvements in fraud prevention, ticket distribution and public payments, it could strengthen the case for programmable digital money within Switzerland’s broader financial infrastructure. Further testing will be important in determining whether those benefits can translate into scalable real-world applications.
