Zcash (ZEC) surged to an eight-year high of $888 before easing to around $843, extending a powerful rally that has lifted the privacy-focused cryptocurrency nearly 48% since August 20. The move has been accompanied by a sharp increase in derivatives activity, with futures positioning nearly doubling in just days and signaling growing conviction among leveraged traders.
The rally comes as investors increasingly focus on privacy-oriented digital assets, ETF developments and renewed institutional participation across crypto markets. At the same time, the rapid expansion in futures exposure introduces greater volatility risk, making the relationship between spot demand, leverage and liquidity increasingly important for professional market participants.
ZEC Reaches Its Highest Level Since 2018
ZEC briefly reached $888, its highest price since 2018, before pulling back toward $843. The token remained far below its historical peak of $3,191.93, recorded in October 2016 during Zcash’s early trading period, when market liquidity was considerably thinner.
Despite that distance from its record, the scale of the recent recovery has been substantial. ZEC has risen roughly 48% since August 20 and more than 1,800% over the past year, after trading as low as approximately $16 just two years ago. The magnitude of the move highlights the significant repricing that has occurred across the privacy-coin segment.
Futures Positioning Signals Rising Leverage
The derivatives market has expanded even faster than the spot market. ZEC perpetual futures open interest increased from approximately $962.5 million on August 19 to $1.8 billion on Monday, representing an almost 87% increase in outstanding positions.
Twenty-four-hour futures volume reached approximately $5.3 billion, while the average eight-hour funding rate stood at 0.0106%. Positive funding indicates that traders holding long positions were paying a premium, suggesting that bullish positioning had become increasingly dominant.
That positioning creates a two-sided risk. Continued upward momentum could trigger short liquidations and accelerate gains, but a sharp reversal could have the opposite effect, forcing leveraged long positions to close and potentially amplifying downside volatility.
Privacy Demand and ETF Expectations Support Interest
Zcash’s renewed momentum reflects broader interest in cryptocurrencies offering different characteristics from Bitcoin and Ethereum. Zcash uses privacy technology designed to shield transaction balances and activity, distinguishing it from major transparent blockchains where transaction data can generally be viewed publicly.
Investor attention also increased after Grayscale filed to convert its Zcash Trust into an ETF in November. The proposal remains under review, but the filing has strengthened expectations that regulated investment products could eventually broaden institutional access to ZEC.
However, the asset’s recovery has not been without setbacks. In June, ZEC fell from roughly $635 to $309 after developers disclosed a vulnerability involving its Orchard shielded pool that could potentially have enabled undetectable counterfeit ZEC. Developers subsequently issued an emergency patch, while the July Ironwood upgrade retired Orchard and introduced additional accounting safeguards.
Institutional Activity Adds Another Market Variable
Mining and treasury activity have also become increasingly relevant. Winklevoss-backed Cypherpunk Technologies launched a Zcash mining operation in August and estimates that its operation represents approximately 18% of the network’s hashrate. The company holds around 323,394 ZEC, valued at approximately $268 million at the figures cited, and has stated an objective of acquiring 5% of the circulating supply.
Looking ahead, the key question is whether spot demand can keep pace with rapidly expanding derivatives exposure. ETF developments, network security improvements and institutional participation could support continued interest, but elevated leverage means price discovery may become increasingly sensitive to liquidations. For professional crypto investors, monitoring open interest, funding rates, spot volumes and regulatory developments will be critical as ZEC tests whether its latest breakout can develop into a sustained market repricing.
