Key Points
- 1inch has launched Aqua, a new protocol designed to unify decentralized finance (DeFi) liquidity across 13 blockchain networks.
- Aqua enables liquidity providers to make the same wallet-backed assets available to multiple protocols simultaneously without locking funds into individual liquidity pools.
- The protocol supports Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Robinhood Chain, BNB Chain and several other blockchain ecosystems.
- 1inch also plans to introduce USDC and 1INCH token incentives to accelerate adoption, subject to community approval.
Decentralized exchange aggregator 1inch has unveiled Aqua, a new protocol aimed at improving capital efficiency by allowing liquidity providers to share assets across multiple decentralized finance applications without fragmenting liquidity.
Unlike traditional liquidity pools that require users to deposit assets into specific protocols, Aqua allows liquidity providers to keep their assets in their own wallets until a trade is executed. The protocol currently operates across 13 blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Robinhood Chain and BNB Chain.
The launch represents another step toward addressing one of DeFi’s longstanding challenges: fragmented liquidity spread across numerous blockchain ecosystems and decentralized exchanges.
Wallet-Backed Liquidity Model
Aqua introduces a wallet-backed liquidity model that allows a single pool of assets to support multiple trading venues simultaneously.
Rather than committing funds to one liquidity pool, providers can authorize multiple trading strategies using the same wallet balance. Assets remain under the provider’s control until an actual trade settles, reducing idle capital while increasing potential market availability.
For example, a user holding $10,000 in digital assets can advertise that liquidity across three separate protocols. While the combined quoted liquidity totals $30,000, only $10,000 can be executed at any given time because all transactions reference the same underlying wallet balance.
The protocol automatically verifies available balances before settlement, ensuring that transactions exceeding available assets are rejected.
Designed to Improve Capital Efficiency
By allowing liquidity to be shared across multiple decentralized applications, Aqua aims to improve overall capital utilization throughout the DeFi ecosystem.
Traditional decentralized exchanges often require liquidity providers to split assets across multiple pools, reducing efficiency and limiting available capital.
Aqua instead coordinates access to a single pool of wallet-held assets, enabling broader market participation without duplicating liquidity or increasing financial exposure.
The protocol combines an onchain registry, wallet-backed automated market-making strategies, atomic transaction settlement and position management tools into a unified infrastructure.
Incentives Planned for Early Adoption
Pending approval from the 1inch community, the protocol plans to launch incentive programs designed to encourage liquidity providers to participate in Aqua.
The proposal includes allocating 500,000 USDC alongside 10 million 1INCH tokens to reward liquidity growth and increase trading activity across supported asset pairs.
The incentive program is intended to accelerate adoption during the protocol’s early stages while expanding available liquidity across supported blockchain networks.
Expansion Comes Amid Organizational Changes
The Aqua launch follows internal changes at 1inch earlier this year.
Earlier this month, 1inch co-founder Anton Bukov publicly stated that he had been removed from the company’s management in late 2025 after advocating operational and organizational changes.
Despite the leadership developments, the company continues expanding its decentralized finance infrastructure and pursuing new products aimed at improving blockchain interoperability and market efficiency.
Outlook
The launch of Aqua highlights the continued evolution of decentralized finance infrastructure as developers seek more efficient ways to deploy liquidity across multiple blockchain ecosystems. By allowing wallet-backed assets to support numerous protocols simultaneously, 1inch aims to reduce liquidity fragmentation while improving capital efficiency for market participants. As DeFi adoption continues to expand across multiple chains, innovations that simplify liquidity management could play an increasingly important role in strengthening the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem.
