Brent Kovar was convicted on 15 federal counts after prosecutors said his Profit Connect company falsely promised investors high crypto returns while using new investor funds to pay earlier participants.

$24 Million Crypto Scheme Ends in Federal Conviction

A Las Vegas business owner faces a statutory maximum of 280 years in prison after a federal jury convicted him of operating a cryptocurrency investment scheme that defrauded at least 400 investors of approximately $24 million. The case underscores the continuing risks surrounding investment platforms that use artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency mining and high-yield promises to attract retail capital.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Brent Kovar was found guilty following a nine-day trial of 11 counts of wire fraud, two counts of mail fraud and two counts of money laundering. His sentencing is scheduled for November 30, although the 280-year figure represents the combined statutory maximum rather than the sentence he is expected to receive.

Profit Connect Promised Returns of Up to 30%

Kovar operated Profit Connect from late 2017 through July 2021. The company presented itself as a technology-driven cryptocurrency operation that purportedly used artificial intelligence software running on a supercomputer to mine digital assets and verify cryptocurrency transactions.

Prosecutors said Kovar falsely represented Profit Connect as a profitable enterprise and offered investors fixed annual returns ranging from 15% to 30%. He also allegedly promised investors a 100% money-back guarantee and claimed that the company maintained hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency reserves.

According to the government, those representations did not reflect the company’s actual financial position. Prosecutors said Profit Connect was not profitable, did not possess the claimed cryptocurrency reserves and had no legitimate business model capable of generating the promised returns.

Investor Funds Were Used to Sustain the Operation

Instead of generating returns through cryptocurrency-related activity, prosecutors said Kovar used money from newer investors to operate the business and make payments to earlier investors. The structure is characteristic of a Ponzi scheme, in which incoming investor capital is used to create the appearance of legitimate profits rather than returns generated by an underlying investment strategy.

The Justice Department also said investor funds were used for personal and corporate expenses, including employee gifts and the purchase of a house for Kovar. Payments to investors were allegedly presented as proceeds generated by Profit Connect’s cryptocurrency operations.

Crypto Fraud Risk Remains a Regulatory Concern

The case illustrates why unusually high and supposedly fixed returns remain a significant warning sign in digital asset markets. Cryptocurrency investments can generate substantial gains, but legitimate returns generally fluctuate with market conditions and underlying risk rather than being guaranteed at predetermined rates.

The prosecution also highlights the importance of independently verifying claims about reserves, technology and profitability. References to artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency mining or large digital asset holdings do not, by themselves, establish that an investment platform has a viable business model.

Investor Trust Faces Another Test

Kovar’s conviction comes as regulators and law enforcement agencies continue pursuing fraudulent digital asset schemes, reinforcing the distinction between legitimate blockchain businesses and investment operations built around misleading claims. For investors, the episode demonstrates how sophisticated technology narratives can obscure basic questions about cash flows, custody and independently verifiable assets.

Kovar is scheduled to be sentenced on November 30. The case could also reinforce scrutiny of crypto investment promoters that market predictable double-digit returns, particularly when those claims are supported by opaque technology or unverifiable reserves. As digital assets become more integrated into mainstream finance, the ability to distinguish genuine innovation from fraudulent investment structures will remain central to investor protection and market credibility.
