SKN | XRP Nears Golden Cross as Crypto Capital Rotates Toward Altcoins

Key Points:

  • XRP’s 50-day moving average is about 2% below its 200-day average, putting the token close to a technical golden cross for the first time since August 2024.
  • Bitcoin dominance has fallen below 59%, while several major altcoins, including UNI, NEAR and ARB, have gained nearly 30% in 24 hours.
  • XRP’s technical setup is improving, but historical data shows that golden crosses have not consistently produced sustained long-term gains for the token.

XRP is approaching a potentially significant technical milestone as cryptocurrency markets show early signs of capital rotation away from Bitcoin and toward alternative digital assets. The setup comes after a volatile week marked by a Federal Reserve rate increase and the setback for the U.S. Clarity Act, developments that initially pressured major cryptocurrencies but have since been followed by a broader recovery in risk appetite.

XRP Moves Toward a Golden Cross

A golden cross occurs when an asset’s 50-day moving average rises above its 200-day moving average and is widely followed as a longer-term momentum signal. XRP’s 50-day average currently sits approximately 2% below its 200-day average, representing the narrowest gap since the token’s previous golden cross in August 2024.

The technical structure has emerged after XRP experienced a sharp move higher earlier in the year before consolidating. A confirmed cross would indicate that shorter-term price momentum has strengthened relative to the longer-term trend. However, the signal would describe market structure rather than guarantee a sustained advance.

Historical Performance Offers a Mixed Record

XRP’s historical data provides an important counterweight to the bullish interpretation of the pattern. CoinDesk’s review of 16 previous golden crosses found that none remained intact for 12 months, with every instance eventually followed by a death cross.

The shorter-term record has been considerably more varied. Of the 10 previous crosses that survived long enough to reach the three-month mark, five were followed by gains ranging from 85% to more than 1,000%, while the other five recorded losses of as much as 32%. The April 2017 signal was followed by a 1,009.6% gain, while the February 2021 cross preceded a 135% increase.

The distribution demonstrates why technical signals are generally most informative when considered alongside liquidity, market structure and broader risk conditions rather than in isolation.

Bitcoin Dominance Signals Broader Rotation

The XRP setup is developing alongside a wider shift in cryptocurrency market leadership. Bitcoin was trading near $78,000 and was roughly unchanged over the preceding week, while its share of total cryptocurrency market capitalization fell to a one-month low below 59%.

At the same time, altcoin performance accelerated. UNI, NEAR and ARB each gained nearly 30% in 24 hours, according to CoinDesk, highlighting a sharp increase in demand for assets outside the largest cryptocurrency. XRP itself was trading around $1.37, according to CoinDesk market data.

The rotation remains selective rather than broad-based. Market analyst Alex Kuptsikevich said traders were cautiously shifting attention toward altcoins, while noting that neither the altcoin season index nor overall market sentiment had reached elevated levels. That distinction matters because isolated rallies can occur without developing into a sustained market-wide rotation.

ETF Flows and Macro Conditions Remain Important

Institutional flows also provide a more complicated picture. U.S. spot XRP exchange-traded funds recorded approximately $5 million of net outflows on Thursday, reversing a small inflow the previous day. By comparison, Bitcoin ETFs attracted roughly $159 million, while Ether ETFs recorded about $39 million of outflows.

For XRP, the next test is whether technical momentum can develop alongside stronger spot demand while macro conditions remain restrictive. Investors will be watching the eventual moving-average crossover, ETF flows, Bitcoin dominance and the performance of other large-cap altcoins. A confirmed golden cross could strengthen XRP’s technical profile, but historical outcomes suggest that confirmation alone is not sufficient evidence of a durable trend.
