SKN | Coinbase Brings Global Crypto Derivatives Liquidity to US Through Deribit Integration

Key Points:

  • Coinbase has completed its integration with Deribit, giving eligible US institutional customers regulated access to Deribit’s global options and perpetual futures liquidity.
  • US clients can access the markets through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets, reducing the need for offshore entities and separate trading infrastructure.
  • Coinbase expects options for US retail customers later this year, while options for institutional and eligible non-US retail users are expected to roll out in the coming weeks.

Coinbase has completed the integration of derivatives exchange Deribit, creating a regulated route for eligible US customers to access global crypto derivatives markets that have historically been concentrated offshore.

The integration combines Coinbase’s international derivatives business with Deribit while connecting eligible US customers to the exchange’s liquidity through Coinbase Financial Markets, the company’s derivatives unit regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Coinbase said balances and positions on Coinbase International Exchange were migrated to Deribit on Oct. 1.

Coinbase Expands US Access to Global Derivatives

Crypto derivatives account for roughly 80% of global crypto trading volume, according to Coinbase. However, US traders have historically faced restrictions in accessing the deeper options and perpetual futures markets available through offshore platforms.

That landscape began changing in May after the CFTC issued guidance allowing Coinbase Financial Markets to connect US clients with global derivatives markets.

Under the new integration, US institutional customers will be able to access Deribit’s options and perpetual futures through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets. Previously, institutions seeking comparable liquidity often needed offshore entities and separate trading infrastructure.

The integration therefore gives Coinbase a way to connect its regulated US derivatives infrastructure with one of the major venues in global crypto derivatives.

Options Access Expands Across Customer Segments

Coinbase expects options trading through Coinbase Prime to become available in the coming weeks, expanding the range of derivatives products available to institutional clients.

The company also plans to introduce options for eligible non-US retail customers during the same period. US retail access is expected to follow later this year, subject to the applicable regulatory and eligibility requirements.

The phased rollout reflects the different regulatory frameworks governing derivatives access across customer types and jurisdictions.

Deribit Integration Strengthens Coinbase’s Derivatives Platform

The transaction also deepens Coinbase’s broader derivatives offering by bringing Deribit’s established options and perpetual futures markets into its trading infrastructure.

For institutional investors, the combination could simplify access to global derivatives liquidity by bringing execution and market access closer to an existing regulated relationship with Coinbase. The move also reflects the increasing importance of derivatives in crypto markets, where options and perpetual futures have become major components of overall trading activity.

The integration comes as US regulators and market participants continue developing frameworks that allow domestic institutions to access global crypto markets while maintaining regulated infrastructure and oversight.

Outlook

Coinbase’s Deribit integration marks a significant step in connecting US-regulated derivatives infrastructure with global crypto liquidity. Institutional access is expected to expand first, while retail options availability will follow in stages. If the rollout proceeds as planned, the integration could make global crypto options and perpetual futures more accessible to US participants while further consolidating Coinbase’s position as a broad trading platform across spot and derivatives markets.
