Fortitude Brings in Former Hut 8 CEO

Fortitude Mining has appointed Jaime Leverton as chief executive as the Zcash-focused mining company expands its operations and prepares to enter the public markets.

Leverton is scheduled to become CEO on Sept. 21, succeeding Andrea Childs, who will transition into the chief operating officer role.

Leverton previously served as CEO of Hut 8, where she oversaw the Bitcoin miner’s combination with US Bitcoin Corp. and its transition into a US-domiciled company listed on Nasdaq.

Her appointment comes as Fortitude moves toward a proposed combination with HeartSciences, announced in June. The transaction is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to the applicable conditions and approvals.

The combined company is expected to trade on Nasdaq under the ticker TUDE.

Fortitude Accounts for 28% of Zcash Production

Fortitude has established a significant position within the Zcash mining ecosystem.

The company mined 72,696 ZEC during the first half of 2026, accounting for approximately 28% of total Zcash network production during the period.

Fortitude reported $20.9 million in revenue during the second quarter.

The company operates more than 60 megawatts of power capacity across seven sites located in South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas and New York.

Fortitude has mined ZEC since 2019 and launched as a vertically integrated mining platform in 2025. The company is wholly owned by Digital Currency Group.

Mining Capacity Set to Expand

Fortitude is also preparing to expand its mining hardware base.

In July, the company agreed to purchase 9,000 Bitmain Antminer Z15 Pro machines. The equipment is expected to add approximately 7.56 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate to Fortitude’s operations.

Shipments are expected to begin during the fourth quarter.

The hardware expansion comes as the company prepares for its transition toward the public markets, potentially increasing its mining capacity and operational scale.

ZEC Rally Adds Market Momentum

Fortitude’s corporate developments coincide with a substantial rally in Zcash’s native cryptocurrency.

ZEC was trading around $1,424 on Thursday, according to the source report, representing a gain of approximately 185% over the previous 30 days and more than 2,600% over the previous year.

The latest move higher followed the disclosure by Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang that the investment firm holds ZEC and is an investor in the Zcash Open Development Lab.

Huang described Zcash as a private complement to Bitcoin and expressed support for its inflation-funded developer fund, arguing that continued investment in privacy technology is increasingly important amid developments in artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

Privacy Sector Draws Increased Attention

Zcash’s performance has also contributed substantially to the broader rally in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies.

According to Glassnode data cited in the source report, the privacy-focused sector was up 213% from Bitcoin’s October 2025 peak as of Sept. 6, while other tracked cryptocurrency sectors remained below their respective levels from that period.

ZEC represented approximately 62% of the privacy sector’s total market capitalization.

Even excluding ZEC, Glassnode’s cap-weighted basket of privacy-focused tokens was up approximately 85% over the previous year.

The figures highlight the extent to which Zcash has influenced the performance of the privacy-coin segment during the latest market cycle.

Public Listing Adds a New Chapter

Fortitude’s planned public-market transaction would give investors another avenue for exposure to Zcash through a corporate mining structure.

The combination of substantial ZEC production, expanding mining capacity and the proposed Nasdaq listing places the company at an important stage of its development.

Leverton’s experience leading Hut 8 through a major corporate transaction and public-market transition also comes as Fortitude prepares for its own proposed listing.

Outlook

Fortitude enters the next phase of its expansion with a new CEO, additional mining hardware on order and a proposed path toward a Nasdaq listing. The company’s ability to translate its Zcash production base and expanded infrastructure into sustainable operating performance will remain important as it prepares for the proposed HeartSciences combination. Meanwhile, ZEC’s sharp market gains and renewed institutional attention to privacy-focused assets provide a broader backdrop for Fortitude’s expansion.
